合宿 in フロリダ ! Spring Break Magic!

Coming back from a super warm place, Florida, where we enjoyed going to the beach, to a super cold place, Massachusetts, where snow still remains, was such a bummer…

Springfield College Men’s and Women’s Tennis Team had come back from Orland, Florida where we had a lot of good competitions and warm and nice weather all around.

Lots of work was required before the trip such as cost analysis, deciding the location, scheduling matches for both team, and preparing for many things as the head coach.

All the work paid off with all of us getting ready for this season, especially for the men’s team that has the NEWMAC conference matches, getting well tanned, just having so much fun with the men’s and women’s team together, and smiling all the way!

Men’s team made tacos, women’s team made macaroni and cheese, and coaching staff made breakfast for everyone one time during this trip, which was fun! Many pictures are below!

スプリングフィールドの男女テニスチームと１週間フロリダ州のオーランドにトレーニング合宿に行って来ました。

行く前にお金の計算、行く場所を決める事、試合の組み合わせを決める事など本当に多くが、総監督の仕事としてありました。

全ての準備が今シーズンへの準備、良い日焼けをした事、と男女チームでいろいろなアクティビティーを行うなど楽しい思い出として、成果が実りました。

２０人分の朝食を用意するのは大変でしたが、良い経験になりました。とりあえず、気候が３５度を超えていた場所からマイナスの場所マサチューセッツにいきなり戻されるのは、非常に辛いものがあります…。

今週もコーチングに指導と、頑張ります。

アメリカで修士号ゲット！【留学 / スポーツ心理学】

皆さん、こんにちは。久しぶりにブログ書く事にしました。

アメリカに来た理由は、英語を勉強する事、修士を取って、博士号を最終的に取ることでした。先月、修士を修了しました。振り返ってみると、正直卒業することだけならそんなに大変ではなかったです。

体育の授業や講義を教える事、論文を出す事、研究費を取る為に書類を出す事。男女テニス部の監督と仕事と責任感が一気に増して、どんどん忙しくなりました。２年前から学校に授業料を全額免除してもらって、給料も頂くなど、そこら辺から一気に忙しくなったなと感じますが、生活が非常に助かりました。こっちの学費は年間２５０万と高すぎです。

最近、郵便で送られて来たこの紙。修士課程を修了したことを表しますが、こんなもんかなという感じです。前に進んでいる結果なので、良かった！

Hi everyone! Long time no see… and Happy Valentine Day! It’s been 2 months since I posted my last blog.

The reason I came to US was to 1) learn sport psychology, 2) get second master’s degree, and 3) earn a Ph.D. Last month, I earned my master’s degree at Springfield College with some satisfaction.

Looking back, it was not as difficult as I had expected to earn a master’s degree, but it was very busy for 2 years. Especially, I had very hectic schedules every day last semester.

My responsibilities were expanded from only taking classes to taking classes, working with athletes, teaching PE & Japanese classes, coaching, writing publications, and to working on grant. All the work I put was paid off – able to write much information on my resume and receiving this diploma.

This is just a piece of paper, but I accomplished something cool. Thanks everyone for your support! Roll Pride!

皆さん、こんにちは！

ひろです。今回は「へー、そうなんだ」って思った事を簡単に紹介してから、学会の話しますね。

最近聞いたことですが、多くの人前で話すことは、アメリカ人の中で2番目の恐怖だそうです。

ちなみに、1番目はなんでしょう？

「死」とのことでした。

アメリカ人はプレゼンテーション上手い、っていうイメージがあるかもしれないですが、嫌いな人が多いもの事実なようです。日本人にもこれは適用するのかな？

確かに、人前で話す。緊張しますよね。自分は好きなんだろうか？

でも、やっぱり好きですね。あまりにも多い人の前だと、どうなんだろう。だから早く教員として活動したいですね。

さて、応用スポーツ心理学学会で口頭発表をしてきました。「あがり」に関する内容です。「研究の話興味ないや〜」の人多いかもしれないのでここに書くのはやめます笑　もし興味あったら発表を取ってくれた子がいるので、それでも見てくださいね！あっ、あんまり画像よくないですよ。笑

Hi everyone,

Last week, I attended at the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.

I was told that giving a talk/presentation to many people is the second fear among Americans, and by the way, the first one is death.

But I am Japanese:) but this may be totally possible to be true for us as human beings. We all probably have some types of fear about giving a talk, but I was able to survive after talking to around 200 people. Wow. The title of my talk was Choking under pressure in tennis.

男女テニス部頑張ってます! / Tennis Success!!

Hi everyone!

Hope you are having a great day! It’s been 1 month since I got back to U.S. I’ve been super busy while at the same time having so much fun with my activities. I am taking 3 classes, teaching 2 classes, doing research, and most importantly taking the lead as head coach for the Pride men’s and women’s tennis team at Springfield College. I try to make a balance to keep all the staff up. I am so pleased to do what I have been doing since the beginning of this semester.

非常に忙しい１ヶ月でしたが、充実した日々を過ごせました。クラスを取ること、クラスを教えること、研究すること、男女の監督、テニス選手の勧誘とすべてのバランスを取るのが難しいですが、なんとか乗り切りました。今までで一番充実した１ヶ月かもしれません。

It’s been such a wonderful month when looking back what was going on. The News Paper about myself for being the head tennis coach was nicely written.The Announcement on the first career win as head coach was also nicely done by the Sports Communication Department. Teaching Japanese at Mount Holyoke College has given me new perspective of what Japanese language really is. Teaching Japanese really makes me believe that Japanese is one of the hardest language to learn, and I feel that learning English is not so difficult if compared with learning Japanese. Lastly, yes, statistics (one of my classes) is difficult …

ニュースペーパーで自分が監督になったことを発表してもらったり、監督になって初めての勝利などデパートメントが非常に手助けしてくれました。また、日本語を教えることで、非常に日本語の難しさに痛感しています。日本語を勉強している方は本当に尊敬に値します。ひらがな、カタカナ、漢字に複雑な文法と困りますね。 Even though the women’s team had a very rough start, we’ve started winning and have continued moving forward to make the NEWMAC conference championship this year. Recent matches we’ve had were against WNEU (9-0), Emerson College (9-0), Clark College (8-1), Nichols College (0-9), and Smith College (8-1). One of my athletes Rachel Litchfield was selected for the Maroon Club Female Student Athletes of the week. This means that she was awarded for the best athlete of the week, which was amazing.

最初は非常に難しいスタートでしたが、最近の試合は生徒が非常によくやってくれています。５試合中、４勝１敗と素晴らしい試合でした。テニス部の成功の定義は勝つことではなく、常に自分のベストを出せるかどうかですが、やはり勝つことは嬉しいことでもあり、間違いなく選手たちの自信の元となってくれると思います。 We are ready to compete against Suffolk College tomorrow. Men’s team will have a match this week against WNEU (10/3) as our HOME match at 4 pm. Please come and support us!

女子の試合が明日、男子が明後日と忙しい日々は続きますが、準備は十分に出来ていると思うので選手を見るのが楽しみです。 Hope you enjoyed this blog! -Hiro

アジアスポーツ心理学 (ASPASP) 学会 !

皆さん、こんにちは！

南太平洋アジアスポーツ心理学学会 – Asian-South Pacific Association of Sport Psychology (ASPASP) – に参加し、研究発表してきました!!

英語で15分の発表でしたが楽しく出来ました。

100回以上練習し、スライドを見なくてもすべて言えるくらいに覚えたので特に大きな問題もなく（多分）、出来た…と思いたい。

どんな質問されるのか不安でしたが、問題なく回答できました。

やっぱり「質疑応答」って怖いですよね。なんでか？

何を聞かれるかわからないので、発表ならひたすら練習すれば大丈夫ですが、質疑応答はそうもいかない。

テニスでいうと、サーブは相手の影響を受けることなく出来るけど、そのあとはどんなボールが来るかわからない、とお伝えしたら宜しいでしょうか。

練習のみ。質疑応答も、どんな質問が来るのかをシュミレーションして、練習するしかないですよね。あとは、本番で「エイヤー」で頑張って答えるのみ！ですね。

あとは、実家のある愛知県でゆっくり。

最後の1週間、日本を満喫してアメリカの仕事に間に合うように帰ります。

Hi everyone!

I attended at Asian-South Pacific Association of Sport Psychology (ASPASP) conference this year August 7th to 10th, in Tokyo, Japan and gave a presentation about my research: choking under pressure in tennis.

I was not nervous at all and enjoyed so much while giving the presentation in English. So many practices helped me out because I could give a presentation without seeing any powerpoint. I was also able to answer 2 questions without any issues, which was good:)

Time to relax in my home in Aichi.

インターハイで選手の勧誘！【コーチング】

皆さん、こんにちは！

ひろ　です。

8月2日～7日まで東京の有明テニスの森で行われていたインターハイにて勧誘しました。何人か男女テニス部に来て欲しいなと思います。

名刺も200枚くらい無くなっていました。

完全に営業マンとして、大学の良さ、特徴、テニス環境、何を勉強することが出来るかなどお話させて頂きました。

また、あらゆる留学に関する質問も受けました。例えば

英語が出来ないけど、入学できますか？
学費はいくらですか？
どれくらいテニスが強いところですか？
何本枠がありますか？
就職先はどんなところがありますか？　など

インターハイに出場している選手であれば、責任を持って2015年の9月入学に間に合うように準備、入学手続きなどお手伝いし、選手をねじ込みます。

奨学金も何人かの生徒には支給することできますので、どうぞよろしくお願い致します。高校３年生で興味のありそうな子がいましたら、伝えて頂けると助かります。

I recruited Japanese high school students on August 2th-7th for men’ & women’s tennis team at Springfield College. The memories, that I participated in the tournament in 2003 and 2004, definitely came back when seeing energetic high school boys and girls performing their best. I gave around 200 of my business cards, and talked with many students, parents, and coaches to figure out who were interested in coming to Springfield College and will be able to keep balance between tennis and study starting from September 2015. I hope some students are coming.

I would like to inform you that I will be coaching Springfield College Pride men’s and women’s tennis team as Head Coach. First, I would like thank Athletics Department gaving me this opportunity. I am truly honored to be the head coach.

一つ伝えたいことがありますが、スプリングフィールド大学の男女テニス部の監督になりました。こんな機会はなかなかないので、頑張りたいと思います!!インターハイでの勧誘も楽しみです。２日～６日まで行く予定ですので、多くの方に会場でお会いできるのを楽しみにしています。アメリカの大学で勉強とテニスの両立に興味がある学生がいましたら，伝えてあげていただけると助かります．

Since I’ve studied at Springfield College, I have been working as an assistant men’s tennis coach as a graduate assistant for 2 years. I am now ready to lead two programs moving forward as the head coach. I am very excited to take this opportunity, and I am hoping that my athletes are also excited about this news. Go SC Pride!

男子のアシスタントコーチの仕事をアメリカに来てからもう2年ちょっとしているので、ヘッドコーチになる準備も出来ました。仕事の面接も1番良かったようで、20人くらいの中から選んで頂いたのを嬉しく思っています。それでは、またいろいろなニュースをお届けしたいと思います!!

学部長が日本へ視察に！

Hello! High humidity in Tokyo is something that I cannot deal with. Sweat all day long…

A few days ago, I was with the President of Springfield College, Dr. Cooper and Director of the International Center, who I called her, Deb as their tour guide in Tokyo. We took a subway, had a lunch, and talked, talked, talked. I was also a translator for a meeting Dr, Cooper with Dean of College of Humanities and Science, Nihon University. I was pleased to help their conversation regarding studying abroad.

先週、スプリングフィールド大学の校長先生と留学生センターの所長さんに東京の案内をしました。また、校長先生と日本大学文理学部の学長さんとの交換級学生を増やすといった内容の会議の通訳者として久しぶりに日本大学文理学部に行ってきました。非常に有意義な時間を過ごすことができました。それにして東京は暑いです。インターハイの勧誘の時は、暑さに苦しめられるように思います。

I hope that they had a great time in Japan, especially for Dr. Cooper who came to Japan for her first time.

夏のキャンプのお仕事とは？【コーチング】

Hello everyone! Hope your summer has been great!

Last weekend, I was able to meet my sweet boys & friends who I met when I was working at summer camp for past two years at KenMont & KenWood summer camp in Connecticut.

This camp is one of the biggest camps in the United States, and counselors are from all over the world, which is the one of the nicest things. Also, this camp really gave me clear ideas of how kids behave and how to take care of them in positive ways.

Over the past two years, I made friends from U.S., England, Australia, and Netherland, as well as and some were from Spain, Colombia, and Mexico.

Because I worked at U.S. Air Force Academy and gave a presentation in Minnesota in June, and will go back to Japan for a month soon, I was not able to work at the camp this year.

But luckily, this week I could meet some of my friends who I worked with at the camp. Nice to catch up with them! Pictures are the tennis court and one of my boys playing tennis.

先週は過去2年間働かせて頂いた、キャンプの子供たちと一緒に働いた友人に会うことができました。

今年は、ミネソタでの学会発表、コロラドで仕事をしていた事、また日本に1か月帰国するため、キャンプで働くことが出来ませんでした。

キャンプはアメリカで最も大きい夏のキャンプの中の一つで、世界中から働きに来る人がいた。

多くの友人を作ることができたので、それが一番良かったことだなと感じます。アメリカのあらゆる場所、イギリス、オーストラリア、オランダからの友人、また、メキシコ、コロンビア、スペインからの友人も出来ました。

Making friends makes me feel very enjoyable in my life. One of the best moments I can ask for is to meet friends who I have not met for a long time. Excited to go back to Japan this week. Thank you for reading my third blog! -Hiro

アメリカで１番人気の州はコロラド？【留学】

This is my first blog. I had been thinking of starting my blog for quite a bit to share things I am doing, and finally, I was luckily to be taught by my friend Daniel, to start one. This time, I would like to share about my ongoing trip in Colorado.

Today, I would like to share three things: working at United States Air Force Academy, playing pickleball, and camping in Buena Vista.

It was fun to work at United States Air Force Academy as a tennis coach. Working at military school is something that I have not done before, so it was a new experience for me. I felt special seeing beautiful view & Rocky Mountains while teaching.

I played a new sport, which was pickleball with the Moore family who always talked about pickleball like crazy. lol I was so luckily to be taught by them how to play, such as rules, strategies, and prevalence of it. I was able to do to a pickleball demonstration event where 30-40 people showed up to see my friend Daniel and me playing. This sport is growing, and I thought that it’s nice to see people playing in Japan.

We went camping in Buena Vista, CO for my friend Perry’s 30th Birthday. Rock climbing was fun but at the same time, my body was sore, which shows that I am a super beginner. One of the things that I enjoyed most was rafting. I had “serious fun”

Ready to enjoy in Denver and then go back to MA tomorrow.
